BLG car terminal in Duisburg posts a record

While the BLG car terminal in Bremerhaven, the largest location in the BLG automobile network, is, in the present general crisis, clearly under the previous year’s level, capacities are being used well for vehicle transportation, and at the BLG inland terminals and technical centres.

Some 15,000 vehicles were thus handled at the Duisburg car terminal in March alone. This was more than double the amount from March last year. This is a result of the scrapping bonus in Germany, which ensures an ongoing demand boom for small vehicles. 700 small and medium-sized vehicles made by Skoda, Renault, Opel, Fiat and Peugeot thus passed through the terminal every day.

While five to six block trains with vehicles normally arrive at the car terminal every week, it was two to three a day in March. Added to this was the arrival of the inland waterway vessels. 250 to 500 vehicles per barge then had to be unloaded, processed, stored or transported by truck directly to the route area for further distribution.

Operation at the terminal is continuing at the car-wash plant, and capacities at the workshop and paint shop are also being utilised well. Duisburg also continues to expect high turnover number for the coming months. Apart from the 70 staff from the main workforce, some 30 assistants have thus also been employed.

In 2008, 57,000 vehicles passed through the 177,000-sq-m terminal. Most of these were new, slightly used cars which were prepared for resale and then distributed. Apart from processing, storage and order picking, the terminal offers all additional vehicle services at the 6,000-sq-m technical centre. Renault is the top-selling customer. Other brands in the 6,000 warehouse bays and 1,200 road parking bays are Skoda, Opel, Fiat, Peugeot, Porsche and Citroen.
